Regular readers of this column might remember that I very reluctantly agreed to let my daughter, son-in-law and their two children move in with my wife and me while they did a major remodel of their home. The tenure was not long---ONLY ABOUT A YEAR OR SO. I was petrified of losing my beautiful empty nest, but I agreed, under pressure, to let it happen.
You are hysterical. And I don’t believe for a moment you accept only good morning and good night from the girls. I imagine you have more contact than that. But I have to say kids are exhausting at our age ( I assume you are over 65 and under 75). And having 3 adults do the caregiving. Piece of cake. So continue to enjoy BUT be aware of your wife .. She needs a bit extra from you. Maybe a weekend out of town or at least the Fairmont top of the hill ..
Being Italian I can say there's nothing better than having grandchildren, esp. granddaughters. Mine are now 5 & 8. You may want to try to interact with them more as they will say the funniest things and later on you will reminisce & be glad you spent the time with them.
We did the same thing to my father. We stayed with him for 6 months, while building a home. My daughter remembers that time fondly. She assumed other grandchildren had the same experience and was so pleased when she was told, he only cooked that way for you!. Happy Valentines Day.
Grandchildren are a blessing. You and your wife are blessed.
Good on you! I've begun inviting a couple of the neighbor kids over for an hour of "homework club" one evening a week (one at a time) to give their mom a break, and because I'm endlessly curious about how the world is working when every kid has to do homework on screens. It's a little jolt of energy and joy every single week. (And sometimes we can play board games, even better, when homework is done!) I may never be a grandma, but it's fine - I can craft my own grand-family locally.
The addition of 4 into your household could have been an incredible disaster but resulted in a gift for all. Of course, when they move back into their home, you will have to deal with the empty nest syndrome again😥
I'm so glad that this arrangement is working out well for you. Two cute little granddaughters! What joy! I think you will have more fun when you help them with their homework, because you will see their mental growth.
I’m so happy it’s working out great and you are loving it! Grandchildren are the best. We live about 3 miles from ours and see them a lot. We lucky ducks and they do say some pretty funny things! Enjoy those grand girls!
This goes both ways …I remember the look on my daughter-in-law’s face when I told her: “Hey! I just bought a house two blocks away from you guys!” She said: “Oh, that that that that that’s… great? “ (It’s worked out beautifully, the grandkids are here a lot. She and my son get lots of free babysitting.).
It could be alot different. My oldest son and his two children moved in with me for five years after his wife left him for someone else and drugs. I love those kids more than words can say!

Yes, all in, being a grandparent is more fun than being a parent.

Even for the selfish a bit of selflessness may reward.
Do an update in 3-4 months. Will be cautiously curious. From grandpa of 8 and 6 year old girls and 4 and 1 year old boys

Those are absolutely the best years of grandchildren! You are really a lucky grandpa…
