Having a young boyfriend or girlfriend is always a good idea. I turned 80 this year and am looking for a man in his early 20s, someone who’s good at carrying stuff and who can make my breakfast. It would be nice if he can drive, as my eyesight isn’t so good at night. It would also be nice if he’s not a Republican. Race doesn’t matter, nor does weight or height. It would be nice, though, if he has money, in case our president cuts my social security. Also, hair matters. I’d like a man with hair.
I was a 25 year old Ford rep. Called on a wealthy car dealer on his 65th birthday. I wished him happy birthday. To me he was on old man. He then said to me, “I would give you everything I have for what you have”. I said “huh?” He responded, “you have time. I can’t buy time”. At 78 I still remember that.
This is spot on! I can’t believe it’s the middle of May already, when it seems like we just got through Christmas! Time is really streaking by and I probably only have 10 years left, if I’m lucky. I always look forward to your columns, and I’ll patiently wait for the next one😁
I have been saying this for several years now. I’m nearly 75. If I’m lucky, I can count on about 10 more years, and if I’m extremely lucky, given my general good health and health habits, they will be pretty decent 10 years.
People asked me why I travel as much as I do. I travel as much as I do because I can, and I enjoy it, and I want to continue traveling for as long as I can. They also ask me why I travel alone, and how I can handle baggage and everything else. As long as I can handle baggage and everything else, I can continue to travel.
My nephew offered to carry a bag for me a few weeks ago. I didn’t really need himto carry it, although I do confess that I’d rather have somebody else carry things than me. Besides, that’s what young people are for – carrying things. But I told him, “no, I have to carry it because as long as I can carry it, I can do all of the things that I like to do.”
As for you getting a new girlfriend: you’re way past the time for a midlife crisis. So I wouldn’t worry about that one at all.
Thank you for a column as it made me laugh out loud. It was very clever and thought filled. I love your wife and I don’t know either of you. I see how you both have gotten along your whole life with lots of love. I also love that you had a hamburger for breakfast because most people won’t admit eating meat let alone having it for breakfast. I used to try to do one new thing a day then it turned into one new thing a week and now maybe it’s one new thing a month. Such a good reminder, to appreciate each day and focus the glasses a little bit more for the moment.
Very perceptive and most entertaining! It made me harken back toJoseph Heller's Catch-22, where Chief White Half-Oat tries to make his life go by slower by doing boring things all the time. Good to be reminded that time goes swiftly when life is good, ironic as that is!
There you go! My mom used to remind us to take the time to smell the roses. In a way, you are following her advice--you are taking the time to enjoy the aroma of a hamburger on the grill for your breakfast. Why not?
Wonderful column. I'm 88 years old and still doing new things as well as traveling (managing my own luggage), busily counting steps, volunteering. So much to do. Not hamburger for breakfast though.
Ironically, I am reading this 3 days after it appeared in my email because I am in The Netherlands and I had a sandwich ( lettuce, tomato, cheese on whole wheat bread; no mayo)! for ! breakfast! And, yes, it’s raining here when we bike…

When you find him, let me know if he has a brother! ;-)

Thank you for the gentle nudge. I need to think more about what is right in front of my eyes. We can't stop time, but we can enjoy the moment!
Thank you Nick.

Wonderful column. “I can’t wait” for your next one. But patiently waiting.
I was eating a fruit and yogurt concoction when I read this. Excellent column.

Thank you Nick. Love your snark and blessings to your lovely wife. 🤩

You hit it right on the head! I will try new adventures too, though I might reject traveling. Thanks again for an insightful and fun article
